Rebirthing Breathwork: Explore the Power of Conscious Connected Breathing
Conscious Connected Rebirthing Breathwork offers a unique and holistic approach to personal transformation and healing.
Breath is more than just a biological necessity; it is a powerful tool that connects the mind, body, and spirit. Among the various techniques of harnessing the breath for personal transformation, Conscious Connected Rebirthing Breathwork stands out as a profound and holistic approach to healing and self-discovery.
In this article, we will delve into the world of Conscious Connected Rebirthing Breathwork, exploring its origins, principles, techniques, and the transformative potential it holds for those who embrace it.
What Are the Origins of Rebirthing Breathwork?
Rebirthing Breathwork, often referred to as simply "Rebirthing," was developed in the 1970s by Leonard Orr, an American spiritual teacher and author. The name "Rebirthing" stems from the idea that the breathwork process allows individuals to experience a form of rebirth or spiritual awakening. Orr was inspired by his own spiritual experiences and sought to create a method that would help people release emotional traumas and connect with their true selves.
Today, rebirthing breathwork continues to evolve through practitioners worldwide. In Sydney, methods like Expansion Breathwork build on these foundations, integrating conscious connected breathing with contemporary somatic techniques for deeper transformation.
What Are the Core Principles of Rebirthing Breathwork?
Rebirthing Breathwork is guided by several core principles that form the foundation of the practice. The participant is guided to breathe consciously and rhythmically. The breath is typically done through the mouth and is uninterrupted, creating a circular pattern of inhales and exhales.
As the participant continues to breathe deeply, they may begin to experience intense emotions or memories surfacing. These emotional releases are seen as opportunities for healing and transformation.
Conscious Breathing
At the heart of Rebirthing is the practice of conscious and connected breathing. Participants are encouraged to breathe in a circular and uninterrupted pattern, focusing on deep, rhythmic breaths.
Energy Release
Rebirthing aims to release trapped emotional energy and tension stored in the body and mind. By consciously breathing through these blockages, individuals can experience emotional catharsis and healing.
Self-Healing
Rebirthing promotes the idea that individuals have the power to heal themselves. Through breathwork, practitioners can access their innate healing abilities and release physical and emotional discomfort.
Integration
The practice encourages the integration of the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of the self. It seeks to create a sense of unity and wholeness within the individual.
Spiritual Awakening
Rebirthing Breathwork is viewed as a means of connecting with one's higher self and experiencing spiritual growth and insight.
What Are the Benefits of Rebirthing Breathwork?
Rebirthing Breathwork offers a wide range of potential benefits for those who engage in the practice. Most commonly people often report feeling lighter and more relaxed with a greater sense of clarity and self-awareness.
Emotional Healing
Rebirthing allows individuals to release suppressed emotions, traumas, and negative patterns, leading to emotional healing and greater resilience.

Enhanced Self-Awareness
Through deep introspection, individuals gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their life experiences.
Improved Physical Health

A Guided Daily Rebirthing Breathwork Practice
Below is a practice that you can use on a regular basis to help clear your mind and body for more emotional regulation and connecting to your inner wisdom and spiritual guidance. This is a quick 15-20 minute practice you can do on a daily basis.
Step 1: Grounding and Connection (Track 1)
Start in a seated position or lying down if more comfortable. Begin by placing your left hand over the navel and your right hand on your thigh or floor to help ground. The left hand over the navel represents connection to the nourishment, support and comfort of the feminine or mother energy.
Inhale/exhale through the nostrils, guiding the breath to fill your lower belly and inviting the breath up to the heart. Feel a sense of grounded support and nourishment and guidance of your breath.
Step 2: 100 Conscious Connected Breaths (Track 2)
At 0:23 seconds start the cycle of 100 conscious connected breaths through your mouth, with no pauses between the breaths. Allow the breath to fill your body from the depths of your belly to the fullness of your heart.
Let the music carry you and support you through the process, providing guidance on the cadence of the breath. Aim to maintain smooth, rhythmical connected breaths. If you maintain this speed it is exactly 100 breaths to the end of the track.
Step 3: Retention, Awareness, and Meditation (Track 3)
As the new song starts, exhale your breath all the way out to a neutral lung (empty but relaxed) retention. As you do, bring awareness back to your core center of nourishing support and hold for 60 seconds.
Then take a full breath in and hold your breath bringing awareness to the point between the eyebrows, to the light of spirit, or whatever name you like to call it. Hold for 30 seconds.
As you exhale, ask the question: "What does spirit (or your inner guide or preferred name) want me to know right now?" The answer will drop into your awareness before thought -- so don't think about it, simply allow it to flow.
Meditate on this message for the next 10 minutes or however long you have. Enjoy the process and notice how life around you can very quickly shift and rebalance.
How Does Rebirthing Breathwork Create Lasting Transformation?
Conscious Connected Rebirthing Breathwork offers a unique and holistic approach to personal transformation and healing. By consciously harnessing the power of the breath, you can release emotional blockages, access your inner wisdom, and experience a profound sense of rebirth and renewal.
Whether seeking relief from emotional trauma, greater self-awareness, or a deeper connection to the spiritual self, Rebirthing Breathwork is a powerful tool that invites individuals to embark on a journey of self-discovery and healing from within.
Is Rebirthing Breathwork Safe?
Absolutely! Rebirthing Breathwork is widely regarded as a safe practice when approached with guidance and awareness. The process is designed to work harmoniously with your body's and mind's natural boundaries -- meaning that your system will only bring forward what you're truly ready to experience and release. In fact, many practitioners compare it to listening to your favourite Spotify playlist on shuffle: you never know which memory or insight will come up, but it's always tailored to what you're singing along to in the moment.
Just as you wouldn't dive into Bondi Beach without checking the surf conditions, it's best to practice Rebirthing Breathwork with a trained facilitator, especially when you're new to it. Qualified facilitators (much like a very kindly personal trainer for your lungs and heart) know how to create a supportive environment, ensuring that the experience remains both gentle and empowering.
So, whether you're curious about unlocking creative potential, processing old emotions, or simply interested in improving your overall wellbeing, rest assured -- Rebirthing Breathwork invites you to go only as deep as you feel comfortable, making safety a top priority at every step.
Frequently Asked Questions About Rebirthing Breathwork
What is the difference between rebirthing breathwork and other breathwork techniques?
Rebirthing breathwork uses a specific conscious connected breathing pattern -- continuous, circular breaths through the mouth with no pauses between inhales and exhales. Unlike box breathing or pranayama techniques that use holds and counts, rebirthing maintains an uninterrupted flow designed to release stored emotional energy and facilitate deep personal transformation.
How long does a typical rebirthing breathwork session last?
A full rebirthing breathwork session with a facilitator typically lasts 60 to 90 minutes. However, daily self-guided practices like the one outlined above can be completed in 15 to 20 minutes, making it accessible for regular integration into your routine.
Do I need any experience to try rebirthing breathwork?
No prior experience is necessary. Rebirthing breathwork is suitable for beginners, as the process naturally works within your body's comfort level. That said, working with a trained facilitator for your first few sessions is recommended so you can learn the technique correctly and feel fully supported.
Can rebirthing breathwork help with anxiety and stress?
Yes. Many practitioners report significant reductions in anxiety and stress through regular practice. The conscious connected breathing pattern activates the body's relaxation response, helps release stored tension, and promotes a calmer, more centred state of mind over time.
